According to an article in the International Herald Tribune, Mabuza traveled to Russia in June for medical treatment that was supposed to last a few weeks. However, the treatment lasted two months.

The secrecy surrounding Mabuza's physical state and his extended stay in Russia have alarmed political experts and opposition political groups.

According to political specialist Dr Ralph Mathekga, the main issue with Mabuza's health is that there are no guarantees that he would be able to take office because his health is uncertain.

There have been many concerns asking if Mabuza's extended stay in Russia would be covered by taxpayers and who had been appointed to Mabuza's positions as deputy president, head of government business, chairperson of the Special Cabinet Committee on Eskom, and chairperson of the SCC on Eskom.

Due to President Cyril Ramaphosa's demand to reform his cabinet, the deputy president will return to South Africa.
