The Paris Saint-Germain package includes crypto fan tokens for star Messi

According to Reuters, soccer star Lionel Messi's financial package includes a payment in cryptocurrency fan tokens as part of his move to French club Paris St Germain, according to a source close to the matter.

The Argentine soccer star's transfer to French club Paris St. Germain includes a payment in cryptocurrency fan tokens, according to a person close to the issue, providing yet another high-profile endorsement for new digital assets.

On Tuesday, Messi, 34, announced his departure from Barcelona and signed a two-year contract with PSG, with a third-year option.

The tokens included in his "welcome package," or signing-on fee, were delivered by Socios.com, the club's fan token provider, according to a statement released by PSG.

The club did not specify how much of the deal was made up of tokens, but he did say he had gotten a "substantial amount." It also hasn't revealed the total financial package.

Fan tokens are a type of cryptocurrency that allows holders to vote on minor club matters. This year's tokens will be launched by Manchester City, the English Premier League champions, and AC Milan, the Italian champions.

Exchanges are where fan tokens, like bitcoin and other digital currency, are traded. They also have a proclivity for wild price volatility, which has prompted various financial regulators to issue investor warnings.

Following the announcement of Messi's transfer to PSG, the club noticed a surge in fan token trading.

“The excitement surrounding the club's latest signings sparked a massive increase of interest in $PSG Fan Tokens, with trading volumes reaching $1.2 billion in the days leading up to the move,” it stated.

The price of fan tokens may or may not be related to on-field performance or results.

PSG's token, which has a market capitalization of approximately $52 million, has risen more than 130 percent in only five days amid speculation of Messi's coming, reaching an all-time high of over $60 on Tuesday. According to the CoinMarketCap website, they were recently down 10% at around $40.
